Apple’s next iPhone might cost more than $1000 thanks to OLED displays

iPhone rumor season is upon us — as if it ever ends — and the latest claims that the next iPhone will cost upwards of $1000 (at least, for the most expensive model).
To be clear, that isn’t a huge deal considering that the top-of-the-line iPhone currently costs more than $900. Still, Fast Company reports that Apple may be switching from LCD displays to an OLED display, which would cost the company more to make the phone. The report also cites sources as saying that the memory in the next iPhone will be upgraded, another contributing factor to the rising cost.
This forthcoming phone represents 10 years of the iPhone, leading many to believe that Apple may call it “iPhone X.”
Rumors suggest that the next flagship iPhone will measure in at 5.8-inches, which is a bit bigger than the iPhone 7 Plus.
Diverging a bit from the current strategy, the next iPhone is said to be released alongside two models that are the same size as the iPhone 7 (4.7-inch) and iPhone 7 Plus (5.5-inch), which will likely be called the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus respectively.
Trusted KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Quo wrote late last year that only the iPhone 8 (or iPhone X) will come with the new OLED display.
Along with the new display and the bigger size, rumors suggest that the back of the phone will be made of glass, and that the sides of the phone will be made of stainless steel instead of aluminum.
But perhaps more exciting is that Apple may be ditching the Home button, placing it under the display for a fully touch interface. In fact, sources are claiming that the next iPhone may not have any physical buttons, instead using touch-sensitive portions of metal for the volume/lock buttons.
Of course, Apple isn’t expected to announce the next phone until Fall 2017, so nothing is set in stone. But if the OLED rumors in particular hold true, you might want to start prepping your bank account for a slightly more expensive purchase come September.

Samsung’s QLED TVs start at $2,500

Samsung touted its new QLED TV series as the next step in TV achievement at CES this year. The TVs, which come in three models — the Q9, Q8, and Q7 — are supposed to be brighter and have improved color reproduction as compared to the company’s OLED line. Now that Samsung, Amazon, and Best Buy have opened up preorders for the TVs, we’ve got pricing details.

The series starts at $2,499.99 for the 55-inch Q7F flat panel 4K model and goes up to $5,999.99 for the 75-inch flat panel model. Meanwhile, the curved versions, like the 55-inch Q8C curved panel 4K model, start at $3,499.99 and go up to $4,499.99. We don’t have pricing or availability for the Q9 flagship model yet.
Beyond the actual display improvements, these TVs include other new aesthetic features, including the “Invisible Connection cable,” which runs from the TV to an external breakout box with the HDMI ports and other critical connections (but not power). This is designed to keep the home theater area a little less cluttered. The TVs also include some new software features, including a sports mode and an expanded music section.

Netflix has renewed The OA for a second season

Fans of Netflix’s supernatural show The OA can breathe easy: the company announced today that it has renewed the show for a second season, according to Variety.

The OA is about a woman named Prairie Johnson who returns to her family after vanishing for seven years. She comes back changed: she had been blind, but her sight has been restored, and she now calls herself The OA. Upon her return, she gathers a group of four teenagers and a high school teacher to talk about her experiences, then asks them to help save several other people, whom she claims are trapped in another dimension.
Netflix released the first season of The OA back in December with little notice, but the show has been compared to the company’s other breakout science fiction hit of 2016, Stranger Things. Netflix hasn’t released a statement yet on when the show will return for its second season, or how many episodes it will include.

Over the last week, 27 teams have been on site at SpaceX in preparation for this weekend’s Hyperloop Pod Competition just outside SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, CA.

The purpose of the competition is to help accelerate the development of a functional Hyperloop prototype and encourage student innovation by challenging university students to design and build the best Hyperloop pod. This competition is the first of its kind anywhere in the world—
teams have put their pods through a litany of tests over the last week in hopes of making it into the Hyperloop test track itself.
